Abstract: Vishnia provides an account of the apparently contradictory evidence in literature from both the Republican and Imperial periods and then tries to divine who the lixae were. Ultimately, she draws on Livy and Sallust to suggest that the lixae were a force charged with plundering militarily-neutralised areas for a particularly sought after spoil of war – slaves.
