Abstract: Daryaee provides a brief narrative history of the Achaemenid Empire, examining its unprecedented achievements in unifying diverse provinces and in administering these through the satrapy system. He suggests that its world historical importance lies in the comparative enlightenment of its rule in comparison to that of the Assyrians and Babylonians; a balance of overarching uniformity of administration combined with embracing economic and cultural diversity made it a success in the view of this author.
