Abstract: This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of the purpose of the book, which is to throw the maximum possible fresh light on both the consistency of certain themes within the reception of the actual battles of the Persian Wars and the diversity of the ways in which they have been treated. It outlines the actual events that led to the Persian Wars. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
