Mythbusting Ancient Rome: the truth about the vomitorium
By Shushma Malik and Caillan Davenport
Abstract: Malik and Davenport argue against the idea that some Roman buildings had purpose-built ‘vomiting rooms’ intended for use after particularly intense feasting sessions. They show that this is a largely modern construct which takes minor references to indulgent feasts in ancient literature, which often represent moral critiques, and converts these into a caricature used to conjure images of highly decadent elites.
