Abstract: Malik and Davenport dismantle the idea that the Theodosian Code banned the Olympic Games on grounds of paganism. Instead, they show, the infrastructure necessary for the staging of the Games fell into disrepair at the same time that economic circumstances made their reconstruction unviable; it was this that facilitated the ‘fizzling out’ of this long tradition.
