Walking, talking and showing off – a history of Roman gardens
by Annalisa Marzano
Abstract: Marzano provides an introduction to the uses of gardens in the Roman world. These were seen by elites as places of leisure and luxuriation, whilst others used them for exercise or planted exotic plant species which they been brought home as mementoes of imperial service abroad. Then, she approaches gardens as imperial projects sponsored by the imperial center as a means of appearing beneficent, acting for splendour, the public good and a high standard of living.
