Abstract: I think it is often assumed that I was drawn to the study of disability in ancient Greece because I have firsthand experience of disability. That, because I have a mobility impairment, which requires the use of a manual wheelchair, I subsequently chose to study mobility impairments within my degree. This is probably true. Although I never intended to study disability, the prominence of impairment within my day-to-day life made the near-total absence of disability within my academic field particularly conspicuous. It simply wasn’t spoken about. So, when it came to choosing a distinct and underdeveloped research topic for my thesis, my choice was clear.
